Nella tradizione medievale Riccardo di San Vittore è legato alla teoria dell’excessus mentis e alla rappresentazione del divino: lo stesso Dante lo definisce colui che «a considerar fu più che viro». Il volume indaga la presenza, diretta e indiretta, del teologo nella Commedia, mettendo a fuoco il suo contributo su temi centrali quali il ruolo dell’immaginazione nella creazione poe-tica o il rapporto fra affetti e libero arbitrio. Emerge così l’importanza del metodo vittorino dell’«esegesi visiva» per interpretare la struttura del poema dantesco quale grande theatrum memoriae.

Richard of St. Victor is connected to the theory of the excessus mentis and to the representa-tion of God. The volume studies his presence in the Commedia, focusing on his contribution to central themes such as the role of imagination in poetic creation or the relationship between emotions and free will. Thus emerges the importance of Richard’s method of «visual exegesis» for the interpretation of the Commedia as a great theatrum memoriae.
