Con i Cantiques Spirituels, tersa parafrasi di brani dell’Antico e del Nuovo Testamento, e le Hymnes…, traduzione bella e infedele di alcuni inni latini del Breviario Romano – intrapresa nell’adolescenza, rimaneggiata nell’età adulta, infine condannata per eresia giansenista –, un legame intimo e profondo unisce la giovinezza e la maturità di Racine, raccolto nella retraite dopo l’abiura del teatro. ‘Margini’ del corpus raciniano, queste poesie attraversano il cuore delle tragedie profane e bibliche.

The Cantiques Spirituels, a fine paraphrase of texts from the Scriptures, were composed after Racine’s retirement from the theatre. The Hymnes were translated from the Roman Breviary by the young Ra-cine, revised in his mature years and eventually condemned for Jansenist heresy. Found at the ex-tremes of the Racinian corpus, these sacred poems create a deep, intimate connection between the young and mature lyricist, echoing throughout the biblical and secular tragedies.
