La missione del cortegiano
 
L’attività diplomatica di Castiglione nel primo trentennio del XVI secolo attraversa la fase più acuta delle «guerre d’Italia», e vede emergere quella ‘diplomazia rinascimentale’ che trovava un modello autorevole nella tradizione italiana. La generazione di Castiglione, Machiavelli e Guicciardini si impegnò a costruire uno spazio politico italiano: la pubblicazione del Cortegiano, dopo il Sacco di Roma, sembra chiudere quelle prospettive; e tuttavia ripercorrere le missioni di Castiglione permette di scorgere nel suo capolavoro il costituirsi del nuovo ceto dirigente europeo.
 
During the first three decades of 16th century, Castiglione’s diplomatic career covered the severest phase of the «Italian wars», when the Renaissance diplomacy arose assuming the authoritative model of the Italian tradition. The generation of Castiglione, Machiavelli and Guicciardini was engaged in creating an autonomous Italian politics: the edition of the book of the Courtier, few months after the Sack of Rome, seemed to seal this age. Nevertheless, retracing Castiglione’s diplomatic missions, we can see in his masterpiece the birth of the new European ruling class.
